By looking at the method of traveling and the ability to easily transfer and adapt to different places, a new approach to the home can be revealed. The mobile home is an existing solution for affordable housing that at present is underused despite its many advantages.
The core elements of the mobile home are taken and reapplied and reconfigured. Based off of a single unit 14 feet by 42 feet, units can be either used as just one or can be stacked to create larger spaces for larger families. This initial unit can then be taken and transferred along with the owner to new locations as their situation demands. Two sites, one in an urban context and one in a suburban context, are used to explore what new features of the transportable home can be revealed.
A basic paneling system allows for easy, affordable changes to be made to the units without large costs of remodeling. Services and insulation are contained within the different panels, along with basic services in the floor slab. By plugging into the core at the site, these units can easily adapt to their present conditions.
